Bibble 5 Confusion, Part 1 By Cory Trese

As a long time Bibble user, I am often grumpy when things change. One thing that I really need is a clear display of "this was edited" for my photographs.

In th screenshot I have attached there are two images selected in Bibble (like a stack) and you can see that an adjustment is visible in the "Basic Adjustments" tab [?]

These images (at least one of them) has a 0.57 negative exposure adjustment. However, they are both without the "edited" or Paintbrush icon.

I have come to the conclusion that either I am confused about what the paintbrush means, that there is some setting to control it or for some reason the changes for these NEF files aren't displaying.

Creating Wedding Photography Web Sites

As a digital wedding photographer, I am required (not by law, but pretty close) to have a web site to stay in business.

Creating new web sites can be challenging for anyone. Creating new web visually acceptable web sites can be a near impossible task for artistic types that often take up photography as a serious hobby, or in my case as a profession.

We are visual people and as my younger brother Martin often reminds me "the artist can see the true flaws of the work, things the casual observer will never notice."

And so we torture ourselves, aligning pixels and stressing over each visual element.

This page of web site creation guidelines can help the new photographer (or artist) and it is posted on www.NaturePhotographers.net which has been a very useful repository of knowledge and tips for me in the past, both regarding general and nature photography.

For me, I always feel a certain amount of humility as I page through the works of talented photographers. I think it is important to respect the work of other wedding photographers without being overwhelmed.

Remember, for all the photographs you see and think "Wow that is perfect" there is a tortured artist somewhere who is obsessing over invisible details in that photograph and wondering how someone could create the wonderful shot you don't know you have.

California Photography -- Moon Shot!

Hello Readers,

As a Sacramento Wedding Photographer I am always looking for things to take photographs of (as practice, ya know!)

Tonight the Moon will be a wonderful subject for photographic study. Why, you ask?

The moon has an orbit around earth that is elliptical. There are times when the moon is closer to earth during this orbit.

Ever so often, the moon being at its closest point to earth coincides with it being a Full Moon.

Tonight, my friends, is just such a night.

What this means is - the moon will be at its brightest and largest you will see for a long time, so a great opportunity to go out and take some shots (hoping it will be a clear night).

My wedding service, Northern California Digital Wedding Photography, has certainly been impacted by the economic climate and we are all making some changes. A wedding is an event of monumental importance in a couple's life and while price is increasingly a factor, the couple's happiness is (and always will be) paramount. In an effort to find advice for my friends, clients and readings I was reading Google newsletters about Wedding Photography and I came across this USA Today Story:

Along those same lines (cutting costs without cutting into the fun) I saw that TheWeddingChannel now has a DIY Weddings Blog called My DIY Wedding Day. I have seen (and taken photographs of!) some very nice DIY weddings.

Another great place to look for ways to save is by re-using or renting things that people were previously buying new. TheKnot has a cool "Trash to Treasure" message board for members where last week's bride can help next week's bride. Renting is another great option and here in the Bay Area you can find rentals of everything from wedding day jewelry for the bride to Rolex watches for the groom.

As a California Wedding Photographer, I spend a lot of time reading about and looking at wedding photography resources. You have to keep up with new trends, track current trends and I, personally, learn a lot from looking at and meditating on other photographer's wedding galleries. Inspiration and ideas for my own work.

Doing random Google searches wedding photography searches today on Google and found this link story about 'Fergie, Josh Duhamel Release New Intimate Wedding Photos' which, apparently, the couple sold to Elle and US magazine. I would not normally post anything about this particular celebrity status-quo, but Fergie and Josh took a new direction and, just perhaps, have triggered another trend in capturing the wedding day. Captured the day after the wedding on-location in the honeymoon suite, Josh and Fergie held various intimate poses (and held each other) while the photographer worked to capture the special emotion (lust?) of the moment. Interesting concept, and not that different than Trash The Dress, in terms of schedule (after the wedding,) cost (one additional photoshoot) and style (very personal and spontanious.)

Like the current 'Trash The Dress' fad, these new Intimate wedding day photographs have made there appearance in big-name print journals like Elle and US, so it is only a matter of time before someone has a blog and e-zine about it. Or may not, a lot of people thought Trash The Dress would come and go too, but it is clearly here to stay (especially out west and for destination weddings, I think that has to do with beaches being a great scene for it.)

It's not a surprise that the Nikon D3X, the company's brand-new $8,000, 24.9-megapixel SLR, tops DxO Labs' sensor performance test. What is a surprise is the margin by which it leads its rivals from Canon and Sony.
When the French firm unveiled its DxOMark Sensor benchmark test last year, Nikon's D3 was the top scorer at 80.6, a composite number that represents various performance features. Very close on its heels were Nikon's D700 at 80.5, Canon's EOS-1Ds Mark III 80.3, and later Canon's 5D Mark II at 79 and Sony's Alpha A900 at 78.9.

Laura,

I gave you an unfair answer to your "what can go wrong with photography?" question. I've been thinking about it while I drove back to the studio. Here are the ones I came up with:

Couples who insist that they have all the photos taken somewhere that is too dark or is just ugly
Couples who leave only 15 or 20 minutes for all the formals
Couples who say they want "intimate portraits" but won't cuddle for the camera
Couples who don't give me any idea of the style they like, provide no shot list and sample clippings
Couples who don't tell me what is going to happen at the reception -- or say they want cake cutting shots but don't tell me when or where the cake cutting is going to occur and I end up behind all the guests

I think we'll do just fine. You and Justin have done a good job organizing and planning the event.

Digital Photograph Workflow Discussion

As a digital wedding photographer I saw this article on the maltaStar.com new site. Honestly, I think the author is underestimating the need for a serious multi-disk backup system and vastly underestimating the storage requirements of a serious professional photographer. Instead of 500-1000 images a day I actually end up shooting between 2,000 and 3,000 images.

He talks about how a CD and an external hard drive are enough backups. I disagree. I suggest two external hard drives, two sets of DVDs and an online-upload backup for total off-site / off-organization, in case of a fire, major hack, or something else disastrous to other forms of storage.

Also, he fails to talk about using RAID10 or RAID5 on the main working disks, forgets to automate his backups, ect.

Nikon D3 -- Incredible!

I just need to say it: The Nikon D3 Rules.

Seriously, it shocks me every time I take it out. With the 85mm f/1.4 the camera is simply unstoppable. Even without AF-S, the auto-focus nearly perfect and at f/1.4 the camera's ability to focus in near darkness is incredible.

Even the D2Xs, another stellar auto-focus performer can't keep up. Both camera's low-light auto-focus is greatly improved with the addition of an SB-800 providing auto-focus assistance beams. However, the D3's 51-point 3D tracking mode makes easy work of difficult auto-focus situations ... for example, dancers on a dark dance floor. Not easy to get sharp focus in those situations, but the D3 comes through like a champ!

Nikon D3 Wedding

I shot a complete wedding the past weekend using the Nikon D3, and it was wonderful.

I used the Nikon D3, two SanDisk Extreme III 12GB Compact Flash Cards (in overflow mode,) and Nikon SB-800 Speedlight and the Nikor 85mm f/1.4 FX format lens.

I have posted about the Nikon D3 and FX format before as well as about the Nikor 85mm f/1.4 and I have been very pleased with both

The 85mm FX format lens really has a chance to shine on the D3. The DX format cameras delivered exceptional performance with the lens, but the 1.5X crop factor sometimes made the 85mm (equivalent to 127mm) awkward for wedding work.

The the full frame FX sensor, the 85mm and the D3 can produce amazing results in any type of lighting. The 85mm's f/1.4 and the D3's high quality 2500 ISO make producing high quality in low light portraits exceptionally easy.

The author actually believes (or writes) you can start a photography business with a $400 initial investment.

... but it doesn't have to be a wallet buster. You can find a good, used 35mm snapper—with lens—for between $75 and $300 (new ones start around $150 and go on up — way up—from there). Larger-format, 2-1/4 cameras usually cost somewhere between $100 and $300 used (while new ones start at $300).

I sure would like to know where you can get a good 35mm camera for $300! I spent over $15,000 this year on 35mm cameras and I only got two of them!

I am personally in love with the D3. I cannot get enough of the 4000-5000 ISO with the wonderful frame rate and ergonimics of the Nikon D2Xs.

...the D3 is highly responsive. Powering it up takes a mere 120 milliseconds and its shutter lag is a short 37ms. The D3 can capture 9 frames per second with a RAW buffer around 17 frames, depending on the exact setting. Similar to the D2X/D2Xs, the D3 has a high-speed crop mode...

That high speed crop mode turns the D3 in a DX format camera, storing around 8MP from the middle of the sensor. The D3 automatically enters this mode when you attach a DX lens.

The D3 is Nikon's first installment to full-35mm-frame FX-sensor DSLRs, and they chose to introduce a sports and news DSLR that has excellent low-light performance. Those were precisely the major weaknesses previously in Nikon's DSLR line up. For those who would like a DSLR optimized for sports, news, and wedding photography, the D3 is probably the top choice. Since the D3 can handle ISO 3200 easily and provides very acceptable 6400 results, it changes the approach to indoor and low-light photography.

The D3 is a dream camera for wedding photographers. My only wedding-related gripe is the lack of a self-cleaning sensor. I am waiting to hear more about the Nikon D3X!

I often comment on this durning sales meetings to help clients see the value of an engagement session aside from getting photographs to use in the newspaper, as the signing photograph at the ceremony and on save the date cards.
